The title of this film is a double entendre in its most pure form. Race looks like it’s going to be good. The historical biopic sees Stephan James (Selma, Home Again) playing the original Usain Bolt; Jesse Owens. Big up to my side boo Jason Suedikis playing the quintessential white saviour in ALL sports films. The following is a list of my receipts: Sylvester Stallone in Creed, Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side, Tom Cruise in Jerry Macguire, Al Pacino in Any Given Sunday etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. I rest my case.
The film is supported by the Owens family and The Jesse Owens Foundation .As we’ve seen with biopics like Aaliyah : The Princess of R&B on Lifetime, the approval of the family is imperative for the success of films based on the lives of beloved public figures.
I love sports films because I don’t have to actually endure the sports themselves. I actually love Track & Field events and with the Olympics coming up this film will be a great warm up for what promises to be a fantastic summer games. Let’s hope Focus Features and Tristar Pictures have filled in their Oscars paper work for the 89th Academy Awards because this smells like a contender.
